Uh-Oh! Uh-Oh! What Day Is It?!

Today is Saturday, March 14, 2020.  

It's been a very long time since I did anything that was Scrappersaurus- or craft-related, and I have truly missed it!  I miss ALL of y'all -- from Northshore, Southshore, Uptown, Downtown, Mid-City, Metairie, Kenner, LaPlace, Da Parish, Da Bayou, and everywhere else!  Which is why I am writing today; I just want to know:

1. Do you enjoy crafting of any sort, and working with your hands?
2. Do you want to take your current hobby to a higher level, or learn a completely new craft?  
3. Are you interested in being part of a local Crafting Community that periodically gets together to share ideas, tips, techniques, and camaraderie?

I would love to begin having Craft Workshops and Crops again, with both individuals and groups.  These can be held at your home, school, business, or a nearby venue.  The following is an example of just a few possibilities; if you are interested in something else, just ask!

Also, I am very comfortable working with people of all different skill levels and abilities, and have worked extensively with people who are blind; deaf or hard-of-hearing; have limb amputation or paralysis; or are otherwise physically challenged or neurodiverse in any way.  It is very near and dear to my heart to teach EVERYONE how to craft, and discover the most appropriate tools and techniques suitable for YOU, as an individual, so you can master the hobby of your choosing.

The *REAL* KOKUYOS are BACK!

Bonjour, mes amis!  Hello, my friends!  Buenas dias, amigos!

I have FINALLY located the King of Adhesives - Kokuyos - and gotten another shipment of them in.

Although my NEW WEBSTORE (www.NOLA-Scrapbook.com) is still under construction, it already has the different packages and pricing available to you for the Kokuyos.

Here is a video Felix helped me create tonight, to show you how the dispenser has been re-designed, and the wonderful improvements made to it.  I simply LOVE this adhesive (as I know you do/will), and cannot help but rave about it! LOL

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2015!

Wow, I did NOT realize that I haven't posted since June; how quickly time goes by!

Recently, while shopping at the Elmwood Michaels (on Clearview Parkway, in Harahan, LA), I had the pleasure of speaking with one of their managers.  During our conversation, I inquired whether they were interested in having an additional Papercrafting Instructor (me!).  Lo and behold, the answer was YES!   There are now three Papercrafts instructors currently on staff at the Elmwood Michaels.

Workshops are already scheduled for Friday nights in January, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.  (Check out our Calendar!)

Tomorrow, Friday, January 9, 2015, will be an INTRODUCTION TO RUBBER STAMPING workshop.  For ONLY $15.00, you will learn:

1. Differences between the types of stamps - including how/when each is best used
2. Differences between the types of inks - including how/when each is best used
3. Proper application of ink or paint to stamps
4. How to obtain a beautiful, crisp impression nearly EVERY time you stamp
5. Proper cleaning and care for each of the different types of stamps
6. Ways to achieve several completely different looks using just ONE rubber stamp
7. Basic tools needed to begin rubberstamping
8. Different uses for rubberstamping

We've moved!

And we are very busy unpacking, organizing, and getting everything set up.

Should soon be fully functional.  After diligently working on it for a couple weeks, I don't know what happened, but the final upload failed and the files became corrupted.  So, needless to say, I've got Felix rebuilding the entire site.  And it is looking great!

Of course, we still have fabulous local-themed items, and I will soon be teaching classes -  and regularly hosting crops - at the local Art store (Art With Heart, LLC). As soon as the schedule is complete, it will be posted on the Calendar of Upcoming Events!

Tips to Stay Warm AND Safe! PLEASE READ!!!

"Baby, it's COLD outside!!!"

Well, if it weren't life-threatening, I'd be laughing about that opening line, but being that a lot of people are still unemployed, under-employed, simply do not have the funding to heat their living quarters, or are outright homeless - it's no laughing matter.

Please, everybody, be SAFE in trying to keep warm!!!  Below are a few tips (and links to websites) to help you stay warm and safe.  PLEASE READ it thoroughly, in case you have forgotten any of it; it could save your life, or the life of another!  I really do care about all of you, and don't want anyone to suffer loss - be it loss of life, limb, pet, home, etc.

• First, and foremost, please CHECK ON FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, AND CO-WORKERS to ensure they have whatever necessary to stay warm.  A lot of people are very proud and do not like to admit that they cannot afford to heat their home or purchase necessary clothing or linens - especially (older) family members.  If you think someone is having difficulty, consider asking them over for the evening.  If you want to help them save face, you could say you want to kick off the New Year with a little get-together, and play board games or charades, or just have popcorn and watch movies (shameless plug: Crafting is always a great excuse!).  Whatever it takes; just remember to take care of others, as you would want other people to check on and take care of you.
• To help someone who is actually homeless, offer them a ride to a local shelter (if not your own house), or give them any of the following: a sweater, coat, hat, scarf, blanket, sheets, socks, mittens, shoes, or the little instant hand-warmers sold at places like Dollar Stores and Sports Stores.
• Drink hot liquids, like tea, coffee, cocoa, or soup, to keep your insides warm.
• Snuggle with your kids, pets, or (gasp!) even your spouse!  LOL!
• Dance, do jumping jacks, jump rope (clear furniture away first!), or do other exercises.  Maybe even have a scavenger hunt; it'll not only keep everyone moving, but it will keep people in a more light-hearted mood and the close quarters won't make tempers flare as quickly (a sad side-effect of too many people in a cramped space under stressful conditions.)
• Watch funny shows on TV, or play funny games: laughing helps keeps you warm!
• Here is a link to FEMA's Winter Fire Safety page. It has individual links for more in-depth information that is most relative to YOUR situation.
• Keep all flammable objects (especially clothing, linens, blankets, paper items) FAR from heat source (heater, fireplace, candle, etc.).  Placing a crib/bed/chair closer to keep warmer is more dangerous than it is worth! Use layering (see below), and maintain a safe distance.
• Layering lighter-weight items traps air in between, providing greater insulation and warmth.
• Layers of newspaper are actually warming, too!
• Keep heat source at floor level, as heat rises UPWARDS.
• Most ceiling fans have a button (usually next to the pull chain) to reverse the direction of air flow, and send warmer air back downwards. (Keep ceiling fan on LOW so it doesn't cool the just-warmed air!)  Here's a link to the info from GoodHousekeeping.com on REVERSING CEILING FAN AIR FLOW FOR WINTER.
• OPEN the flue whenever using a fireplace.
• Only burn recommended items in a fireplace - NEVER plastics or trash!  (Click here for more in-depth FIREPLACE SAFETY from FEMA.)
• Here's an awesome article from Wikipedia on HOW TO STAY WARM WITHOUT USING A HEATER.
• This is another article, from eHow.com, on 3 WAYS TO STAY WARM AT HOME WITHOUT A HEATER.
• If you have pets, this article from VetStreet.com  helps you KEEP OUTDOOR PETS WARM.  (Here's another great one from them on WALKING THE DOG IN WINTER.)
• This article from HubPages.com tells you specifically HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR CATS WARM IN WINTER.
• There is more (different) info in this article from PetPlace.com; although it says it is for 'Pets', it seems more specifically written for dogs.  Either way, it has very valuable information: 10 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR PET WARM THIS WINTER.

WEEKLY CROPS COMING SOON!!!

Oh, I am SO EXCITED!  I've got GREAT NEWS!

This weekend I will be checking out a place on the Northshore; if I think it would be appropriate for us, Scrappersaurus will soon begin holding weekly crops again, as well as Workshops and Events!

Isn't that fabulous?!

While I know we will be starting off with just weekly Friday crops, I really don't have much more to say right yet, but as soon as everything is settled, I will post it here on the Blog and tell you when you can begin making reservations!

Also, orders are currently being put together for NEW MARDI GRAS PRODUCTS, and the website is once again going through an upgrade (Yes, again!  LOL).

The Webstore will soon be fully functional and back online, for you to place your orders. 

Yes, I definitely believe 2014 is going to be an outstanding year for Scrappersaurus; stay tuned!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year's Eve, Everyone!

First, an announcement: 
Things simply didn't work out as anticipated; therefore, I am no longer an employee of nor associated with Michaels Arts and Crafts stores in any way, shape, or form. 

That said, I want to wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year, filled with endless possibilities, and boundless joy and fulfillment!

Felix and I are still looking for a house to purchase.  I feel like we've been searching for just under a year now, and haven't been able to find anything that really works for us.  It gets kind of frustrating, after so long.  We aren't able to reopen the webstore fully until we get settled into a house, and I am just itching to get things started up again!  I so much miss having a storefront!

If you know of anyone selling a home - Southshore or Northshore - please let us know!

Also, I've been considering sharing a small storefront with another business, so if any of you know of or have a space to share, please contact me!

January Crop in N.Y. / FREE Cricut Create cuts this week!

Season's Greetings, and all that mushy stuff! LOL!

We received the following special request; you know Scrappersaurus is always happy to help out, particularly when it is for something near and dear to our heart!

PS37 is a self-contained Special Education School for Children with Disabilities (such as Autism, Congenital Heart Disease, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy).

 

On January 18, 2014, the PTA of PS37R is planning to hold their 3rd Annual Crop for Our Kids Scrapbook Event to raise money for much-needed equipment, which the Department of Education cannot pay for.  Approximately 150 scrappers, mainly from around the New York area, will be attending.

 

Any, and all, donations made to help achieve the goal will be greatly appreciated!  Items are needed specifically to raffle off to raise funds needed for equipment purchase, as well as for inclusion in the goody bags for croppers.  All proceeds go directly to the children, and are tax deductible.

Snowflakes for Lisa / Translate from Chinese?

Hello, y'all!

With Thanksgiving behind us and Chanukah underway, many are now looking forward to the Christmas and Kwanzaa Celebrations, as well as the upcoming New Year.  Times may be tough, with jobs and the economy uncertain, and focusing on the blessings we DO have - RIGHT NOW - can see us through until things eventually improve.  Crafting can be very helpful in relieving stress; plus, you have the added benefit of creating something beautiful you can give to someone you care about.  A true gift from the heart!

I have a good friend, Lisa, who is currently really into snowflake designs.  She sent me a link to one project she found that we both think is stunning.  However, the only directions are photos of each step, but the writing is in Chinese (I think!).  I'm sorry, guys... I can do English and Spanish, and even a little French and Italian, but Chinese is totally out of my area.

Can someone out there help?  I would love to post this project on the website, with full accompanying instructions written in English.

In the meanwhile, here it is, so you can see what it looks like.  Personally, I think it would make a gorgeous handmade paper poinsettia!  I'm going to attempt making one from the pictures, and will post my results tomorrow.

Cricut Test Drive, Fiskars AdvantEdge Punch System, Card Workshop & Demo Schedule

Yooooo hoooo!  It's DEE!  Did you miss me?! LOL

I want to thank the ladies who showed up for tonight's Cricut Expression 2 Test Drive at Michaels on Veterans.  We learned that the Expression 2 is quite different from the Personal or original Expression machines (LOTS of upgrades)!  There were a few issues at first, but after sorting them out, we learned some good information for future use.  Plus, I will be using the Cricut Expression 2 to create fun Holiday items at the December 7th Scrap-IN (3pm-9pm; $5.00), for anyone who wishes to participate.

Join me on Saturday, November 23rd between 1pm-3pm, when I will be demonstrating the new Fiskars AdvantEdge Punch System. The demonstration is FREE, and takes just a couple minutes to show you how to create beautiful borders! 

Then, on Tuesday, December 3rd, I will be repeating the Classic Holiday Card Tricks Workshop ($20), from 6pm-8pm.

Saturday, December 7th is an Open Crop from 3pm to 9pm ($5.00).  I will have hot coffee, hot tea, and hot cocoa for you all, and maybe some other special goodies.  Feel free to bring whatever project you are currently working on, and I will be available to assist you with any questions you may have.

Due to many of us having obligations in connection with Hurricane Preparedness, I will not be able to host the World Cardmaking Day Crop tomorrow at Michaels.  L

World Cardmaking Day Crop THIS Saturday!

Hope you have your totes packed and ready, because THIS Saturday -- Saturday, October 5th, is World Cardmaking Day!   (Always the FIRST Saturday in October.)

From my understanding, it originated from being the day that most crafters would start working on their holiday cards and projects, and because it was so universal, it became World Cardmaking Day.  Now, papercrafters everywhere take this day to celebrate their passion for handmade greeting cards, get together to crop, socialize, party, play games, and even win contests and prizes.

I will be hosting the World Cardmaking Day Crop at Michaels (8851 Veterans Blvd. in Metairie) between 3pm and 9pm.  We have lots of fun planned, and the fee is only FIVE DOLLARS ($5.00) to participate!

In addition to crafting some holiday cards, there will be goodie bags, refreshments, games, and make-and-takes for each paying participant.  A Cricut Expression will be there for shared use, along with a decent selection of cartridges.

Seating is limited, so please call/text me to reserve your seat and goodie bag.  At that time, I will give you more information on what you'll need to bring, and what you won't need to lug along with you. 

Whether you choose to spend this day with us or with other friends, I'm certain you'll have a great time working with the craft that brings us all such joy!

Traveling Workshops - to be held at Your Home or Business!

In the coming days, I will be posting a number of different Workshops on the website to choose from, in which I will come to your home or place of business -- along with all the tools and materials necessary -- to conduct the Workshop.

If you don't see one that fits your needs, a Workshop can be designed specific to your request, usually at no extra charge.

Holiday Greeting Card Workshops are already being scheduled, teaching Basic Stamping and Coloring Techniques. More Advanced Techniques can be used for those already familiar with stamping and coloring. Or, you can simply use the time as a General Greeting Card Workshop & Crop with your friends, family, and co-workers, and I will be there to assist everyone, answering questions about products and demonstrating requested techniques.

When the Workshop is booked, you will choose the image(s) to be used, and a card will be designed specifically for you.  Each Workshop will have its own unique card design, so the same rubber stamp images can be used in more than one group's Workshop.

Shown below is a sample Bayou-Themed Christmas Card, but as it will be your private Workshop, it can be any type of card: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, Day of the Dead, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.

Scrappersaurus' Winter Pelican Christmas Card

Silver Linings, Rub-Ons, and Un-Du Adhesive Remover

I'm working on custom albums right now, and want to share my mishap and the knowledge gained from it.

The other day, I was quite distraught to find that the beautiful flourish rub-on I was adding to my layout came out spotty.  Absolutely nothing seemed to work to get the full image to release.  Then, I thought I was going to have to re-create the entire layout when the adhesive eraser did not work at all in removing the parts of the rub-on that did transfer.

There I was, racking my brain trying to figure out if there was anything else I could use, when I saw my bottle of Un-Du Adhesive Remover on the desk.  After thoroughly re-reading the label, I was convinced it was worth trying; after all, it couldn't possibly make it any worse!

Guess what?  It worked! 

Here's what I did, and what I learned:

I used the tip of a foam cosmetic wedge (not one cotton swab was to be found!) to apply Un-Du to a piece of rub-on that needed to be removed.  Then I rubbed the (dry) back of the wedge (in one direction) over the same area, and a little bit of it came up!

Taking my time, I was able to salvage the entire layout by wetting the rub-on with Un-Du, then using a dry corner of the wedge to tease it up from the paper. As pieces of the rub-on came off, I wiped them from the wedge so the ink wouldn't smear while I tried to remove the next piece of rub-on.

Also, as I worked on it, I realized I didn't have to keep applying the Un-Du to the wedge, because it didn't evaporate out of the foam like it does out of cotton swabs.  Which meant I was able to use far less Un-Du than usual.  As I needed to reapply the Un-Du to the rub-on, I just pressed down the tip of the wedge where I had initially applied the Un-Du, until the rub-on was wet.  It worked so well, it was almost eerie!

They say every cloud has a silver lining.  Mine had three!  1.) The layout was saved; 2.) I learned how to remove rub-ons using Un-Du; and 3.) I learned that, in some applications, a foam cosmetic wedge works better with Un-Du than cotton swabs, because it prevents the solution from evaporating too quickly.

Plus, I was thrilled to have discovered a new use for my dear Un-Du -- as well as a new way to apply it!  (Yes, it takes so little to make me happy...)
